at Latymer Upper School in London.
Upon completing secondary school, Rickman pursued graphic
design at Chelsea College of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art. He
started a design company with his college friends and participated in the
amateur Group Court Drama Club. However, at the age of 26, he left his company
to pursue acting and was accepted into RADA, one of the world's most
prestigious acting schools.
A few years later, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company,
where he appeared in The Tempest and Love’s Labour’s Lost. His breakthrough
role came in 1985 when he played the anti-hero Le Vicomte de Valmont in Les
Liaisons Dangereuses, which earned him a Tony nomination and led to several
film offers.
In 1988, Rickman played the role of Hans Gruber, the
criminal mastermind, in the movie Die Hard, which catapulted him to
international fame. He continued to play villainous characters in films like
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and earned awards for his performances in Sense
and Sensibility and Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny.
One of his most iconic roles was as Severus Snape in the
Harry Potter film series, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's
Stone in 2001. He played the character with such conviction that he became a
sensation around the world.
During his illustrious career, Rickman received numerous
acting nominations and awards, including Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for his
performance in Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny. He also directed three plays
